Atrophic gastritis in dogs is a chronic inflammatory disease accompanied by progressive structural changes and atrophy of the glands of the gastric mucosa. Violation of the morphofunctional state of the mucosa in this disease can lead to disorders of the secretory and digestive functions of the stomach, which necessitates the need for comprehensive clinical, laboratory and histological diagnostics. The aim of the study is to establish the pathophysiological, clinical, diagnostic, biochemical and histomorphological features of atrophic gastritis in dogs, as well as to determine the nature of structural and functional changes in the gastric mucosa and their relationship with the indicators of the biochemical profile of the blood. The study was conducted at the Animal Protection Center of the ZСС during 2023–2026. We identified biochemical changes characterized by increased activity of liver enzymes, in particular AST, ALT and GGT, compared to the control group, which indicates a violation of the functional state of the liver and the development of concomitant metabolic changes in atrophic gastritis. A slight decrease in the total protein content of sick dogs was found, which indicates a violation of the processes of digestion and absorption of nutrients in the gastrointestinal tract, as well as insufficient intake or absorption of proteins due to atrophic changes in the gastric mucosa. Histological examination of gastric mucosal biopsies allowed us to establish characteristic morphological changes inherent in atrophic gastritis in dogs and to assess their severity. According to the results of histological examination, we established pronounced structural changes in the gastric mucosa, characteristic of atrophic gastritis: thinning of the mucosa, reduction in the number and size of gastric glands, disruption of their architectonics, dystrophic changes in epithelial cells, as well as infiltration of the lamina propria of the mucosa by inflammatory cells.
